Lazaro Perez was born in Cuba on December 17, 1945, and practically "grew up with a dress form and measuring tape in tow," as stated by him on his biography page. While living in Chicago, his mother created dresses for brides and he would assist his mother, getting inspired every second to take it big into the future.
He attended the Ray College of Design at the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago and was awarded ‘Best New Bridal Design’ in 1981, in all three categories of bridal, bridesmaid, and mother of the bride. He later moved to New York as an apprentice for bridal house Galina-Bouquet. Following his apprenticeship, Lazaro became head designer for Richard Glasgow’s Riccio collection. In the year 1994 Joe Murphy, JLM Couture President, and CEO, brought Lazaro into the JLM group to launch his iconic launched the Lazaro Collection of bridal and bridesmaid gowns. Since then, there has been no looking for him.
In February 2010, Lazaro was named head designer of JLM’s Tara Keely Collection. It initiated many other collections over the years that followed. Over his career of two decades, Lazaro has been repeatedly recognized by the fashion industry.
Among other honors, in 2001 he was given the Distinctive Excellence in the Bridal Industry (DEBI) award as “Style Innovator for Bridal Gowns,” as well as being named “Designer of the Year.” In the year 2004, he received the “Couture Bridal Award” in the bridesmaid category by Wedding Dresses Magazine.
Lazaro is a favorite among many celebrities such as Mariah Carey, who renewed her vows to Nick Cannon in a princess-inspired gown in the year 2013. Morgan Petek also got married to country singer Jerrod Niemann in a Lazaro creation. Apart from that, he has also dressed other celebrities like Christy Romano, Laura Perloe and Joelle Carter, Adrianna Costa and Ashlan Gorse, jewelry designer Gigi Yallouz, and surfer Bethany Hamilton.
