Claire Pettibone was born on May 23, 1967. Being the only child of her parents, Claire was born with an artistic flair. Her father, Richard Pettibon, was the Appropriation Movement’s pioneer and her mother, Shirley Pettibone, was a realist painter. She spent most of her early childhood in Upstate New York in a 19th-century house that was decorated with antiques and was surrounded by natural beauty. The setting acted as a wonderful inspiration for her mindset which later transformed into her future signature designs.
Since she had a lot of exposure to art, being born to artist parents, it was inevitable that Claire would enter a creative field. She attended Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles. Thereafter, she met Guy Patrick Toley (who went on to become her husband the next year), and together they launched their own brand - ‘Body & Soul’ - in 1993. The brand's first lingerie line was featured in Nordstrom stores across the nation. In the years that followed, her collections were featured in Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and other leading international specialty stores.

The Castle is a historic Los Angeles landmark and was built in 1928. All of their made-to-order gowns and accessories are hand-crafted in this Los Angeles atelier.

In June 2012, UK pop sensation, Una Healy, from the girl group The Saturdays, donned the designer's Luna gown from the Continuing Collection for her wedding.
After 12 years at the Beverly Hills location on Robertson, the "Claire Pettibone Flagship Salon" has moved to a Los Angeles historic landmark called "The Castle," or historically called the Heinsbergen Building on Beverly Boulevard and is officially open as of July 10, 2013.
